Respect for rights and cultural content is an essential part of general education. Therefore, the education project ‘Education, learning and copyright’ is launched for student teachers at the country’s university colleges.

Learning and education – in primary school as well as in the rest of life – requires that new knowledge is created and thus that content is used with respect and consideration. In collaboration with Copydan and Hans Reitzels Forlag, the Rights Alliance wants to help ensure that knowledge about rights becomes a natural part of teaching in Danish primary schools. Therefore, we have developed the information project “Education, learning and copyright” for teacher students and teachers, focusing on the fact that respect for rights and the importance of cultural content is a very important part of general education. The concept of education is an important component of teacher training.

Learning video with recognized educational thinker

The project consists of a conversation video and workshops at the country’s university colleges. In the video, the teacher students meet the respected and well-known educational thinker and Associate Professor of Pedagogy Keld Skovmand in a conversation with editor Henrik Juul from Hans Reitzels Forlag, Maria Fredenslund from the Danish Rights Alliance and Dennis Johansen from Copydan. Based on the concept of education, which has become increasingly important in the classroom, the conversation unfolds how respect for rights is connected to education and learning, how to use cultural content in education, and why this is important from an educational perspective. The half-hour conversation video also explains the opportunities that the licensing system offers future primary school teachers to communicate creative content to their students.

Workshops and compendium

In addition to the conversation video, the Rights Alliance, Copydan AVU and Hans Reitzels Forlag have held a series of workshops for teacher students at university colleges across the country since December 2022 and until now. These workshops have presented knowledge about basic copyright and the importance of rights in a societal context and discussed how they, as future primary school teachers, can introduce their students to rights and their importance.

A compendium and presentation materials have been prepared for the workshops. The material is designed so that teachers of future teacher students will be able to use the material without the participation of the Rights Alliance.

The compendium can be used by both teacher students and current primary school teachers to gain basic knowledge about copyright and the possibilities offered by the Danish contractual license system if you want to show audiovisual content in teaching. We will continue to give presentations at the teacher training program for the rest of 2024.

To promote the conversation video to the target group, we were present at Lærfest on March 13-14, which is a trade fair about schools, teaching aids and good teaching, where teachers can gain insight into new teaching aids and find inspiration to develop their teaching. In the coming months, we will also advertise the conversation video and workshops in relevant media and channels.

The project is funded by Dreyers Fond and the Ministry of Culture.
