Maria Fredenslund will, along with a number of knowledgeable experts, participate in the work to identify the challenges that artificial intelligence poses to copyright and how we solve them.

The Rights Alliance has just been selected for the Ministry of Culture’s expert group on copyright and artificial intelligence, which aims to make recommendations on how to address the challenges that artificial intelligence poses to copyright protection. Maria Fredenslund participates in the expert group, along with other representatives from rights holder organizations, industry associations and technical experts.

In a press release from the Ministry of Culture, Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt says:

“I am very pleased that the expert group has now been established and that the work can begin. The use of artificial intelligence is developing at a rapid pace, and our legislation must keep up with the times. The development and use of artificial intelligence by tech giants offers many opportunities for the creative sector, but also raises major copyright issues. For example, the unauthorized use of artistic works as training material for the development of artificial intelligence, without the artists behind it being paid. The expert group has been given the important task of describing the challenges that artificial intelligence poses to copyright and suggesting how we can solve them.”

CEO of the Rights Alliance, Maria Fredenslund, says:

“I am honored that the Rights Alliance has been appointed to the expert group and very proud to represent Danish rights holders in this context. Artificial intelligence is a serious challenge to copyright and the protection of Danish content – perhaps the biggest ever. We would therefore like to thank the Minister of Culture for the initiative to find the right solutions, in collaboration with a wide range of competent and dedicated actors in the field. I very much look forward to taking part in this.”

Political awareness on responsible AI

Artificial intelligence brings many challenges when it comes to complying with and respecting the copyright of others. This is especially true for the training of generative AI services, which the Rights Alliance has uncovered often involves the use of illegal copies of content, for example in the Books3 dataset. Furthermore, we see that users of AI services such as ChatGPT tailor chatbots by feeding them with protected content.

The appointment of the expert group is a sign that Danish politicians are serious about protecting copyright in relation to artificial intelligence. We look forward to representing Danish rights holders in the expert group, where we will work to develop recommendations for regulation that best protects Danish rights holders against artificial intelligence.
