The man charged with systematically sharing sex and nude scenes from Danish films and TV series is set to appear in court on Friday, October 31.

Between March 2022 and May 2023, nude and sex scenes from Danish feature films and TV series – featuring more than 100 female actors – were systematically shared in the Reddit group “SeDetForPlottet.”

A decision in the case is now approaching, as the man charged with orchestrating the distribution is set to appear before the Frederiksberg District Court on Friday, October 31.

The man, who went by the username “KlammereFyr” on Reddit, has been charged with serious violations of copyright law, including infringing the affected actors’ moral rights. This refers to violating their artistic integrity by sharing nude scenes outside their original artistic context, in versions edited to appear overtly sexualized.

The Rights Alliance reported the case to the police on behalf of the Dansk Skuespillerforbund, Danske Filminstruktører, the affected film producers, DR, and TV 2. The case is believed to be the first criminal proceeding concerning moral rights – including the right of respect – under the Danish Copyright Act.

An important battle for the right of respect

The case illustrates that the illegal sharing of films and TV series can have far-reaching consequences for the affected rights holders. This is especially true for the actors who serve as the public faces of the work and who are therefore impacted both professionally and personally when their right of respect is violated through the unlawful distribution of nude and sex scenes.

The Danish film industry has established guidelines specifically for nude and sex scenes in films and TV series to ensure that such scenes contribute meaningfully to the storytelling and that actors are protected – both during the filming process and in the subsequent promotion of the works.

Based on the case, the Rights Alliance has developed an educational program about the right of respect, aimed at helping young people reflect on image sharing and consent online. The program, titled “Delt 4.2 millioner gange,” was developed in collaboration with Gyldendal and can be accessed here.
